Fascination of the Wealthy â€Å"The Doll’s House† by Katherine Mansfield is a short story revolving around the three Burnell sisters and their dollhouse. The girls, Isabel, Lottie, and Kezia, are overjoyed upon receiving the dollhouse as a gift and want to show all of their classmates but are not aloud to talk to the little Kelvey girls. Katherine Mansfield’s story, â€Å"The Doll’s House,† represents how social status can affect people’s personalities, starting at youth, through the symbolism surrounding the Burnell’s dollhouse, the descriptions of all the characters, and how all the girls in the story act compared to their parents. The Burnell girls’ dollhouse symbolizes wealth and how people view the wealthy. When the dollhouse first arrives, the character of Aunt Beryl, who seems to be the three sisters’ primary caretaker, won’t allow the dollhouse indoors because the smell of fresh paint is too strong; howeve r, the girls are too amazed with the gift to even think about how toxic it is. The narrator says, â€Å"But perfect, perfect little house! Who could possibly mind the smell?† This is very similar to how people view and treat the wealthy. People of wealth can be truly awful, cruel people, but because of their money, they are treated kindly and welcomed. As the girls cry out with delight, it is said that â€Å"the Burnell children sounded as though they were in despair.
